Aims and scope

International Journal of Esports (IJESPORTS) is an online open access journal dedicated to advancing research in esports. The journal aims to publish, collate and stimulate high quality research within this field.

Whilst we have a focus on health-based study in esports, we invite original publications across the full spectrum of related work, ranging from information technology-based analysis to business and the social sciences. High quality quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as perspective articles, are encouraged to cover the breadth of study that esports encapsulates.

We have changed the traditional way of presenting academic work: a tailored article layout and editorial system, a highlights section in every article, a social media presence, and translation for the three major languages (English, Mandarin and Spanish). Open access and licence

IJESPORTS is a gold open access journal: from the moment an article is published, anyone with an internet connection can read it, free of charge, on any device. Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence, which lets anyone share and adapt the work provided the original authors and source are credited.

Peer review

Manuscripts are accepted on the basis of novelty, quality and relevance. Unless otherwise stated, papers are double-blind peer reviewed by at least two well-placed reviewers. The decision to accept or reject lies with the Editorial Board.

Members of the editorial board or review panel who submit articles never review their own work, and board members disclose their competing interests annually. IJESPORTS supports the publication of negative findings. Reviewers may choose to have their name and affiliation published with the article. Guidance for reviewers: How to peer review.

Publication fees

Submitting an article is free. If an article is accepted for publication following peer review, a publication fee is payable by the authors before the article is released for open access publication. The fee covers the development and maintenance of the publishing infrastructure and is kept to a minimum by our in-house technical team and partnerships with industry.

The publication fee is waived for:

  • articles authored solely by students;
  • articles authored solely by editorial board members;
  • articles authored solely by members of an academic institution affiliated to IJESPORTS;
  • articles responding to a research call made by IJESPORTS.

Publication ethics

Our ethical policies are adapted, with permission, from the guidelines of the British Medical Association. They cover confidentiality, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, corrections (errata), retractions and appeals. Articles are routinely checked for plagiarism. Read the full Ethical policies.
